Topic Description: Competing:
An overview from the other side of the judges bench.
A look into my criteria and tips to elevate your performance.

About Patricia:
Patricia is originally from Aberdeen, starting piping when she was 8 years old. Her first tutor, Sandy Robertson of The Bon-Accord Ladies Pipe Band introduced her to Bob Nicol where she received Piobaireachd tuition for many years, thereafter continuing with her husband Murray.

A pioneer for female solo competitors, she was one of the first females to compete at the Argyllshire Gathering and Northern Meeting in 1977, following the passing of the Sex Discrimination Act by the UK government. She was the first female to be placed, with prizes in the Gold Medal at the Northern Meeting in 1978 & 1979.

She is an active tutor with great success. Silver Medal at the Argyllshire Gathering, and helping her daughter Faye win the Gold Medal at the Argyllshire Gathering in 2010. She has taught in Australia, Brittany, New Zealand and America.

Patricia is a member of the Solo Piping Judges Association, and as a senior piobaireachd judge since 2013, has adjudicated at most elite events including the Gold Clasp (Northern Meeting), Senior Piobaireachd (Argyllshire Gathering) and Glenfiddich Championship.

Her proudest moment was supporting her daughters Fiona and Faye who both qualified for the 2010 Glenfiddich Fiddle and Piping Championships.

The CLASP – Practice Chanter Competition – September 2026

The CLASP - Practice Chanter Competition - Sponsored by ES Session Chanters
Entries for this competition will close on Friday 18th September 2026 and Competitors should email their video submissions to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk by Sunday 27th September.

Competition Information
CLASP are delighted to continue a new series of online practice chanter competitions for adults who are in the early stages of their piping journey and not yet ready to compete in a bagpipe competition.

We are also very excited to announce that CLASP is continuing its partnership with ES Session Chanters and the overall Practice Chanter Champion will receive one of these fabulous chanters as a prize.

Our aim
To offer adults at the early stages of their piping career a competition platform, which is geographically accessible to all, to comfortably begin competing and help the transition between learning on the Practice Chanter and competing in amateur solo bagpipe competitions.

Practice Chanter Events on offer:
Piobaireachd Ground
2/4 March (2 parts repeated)
Strathspey & Reel (2 parts of a Strathspey and 2 parts of a Reel)
Jig (2 parts repeated)

*Competitors can enter one, two, three or all four events. Points will be on offer for all four events, which determines the overall winner.

Who can take part
Competitors should be age 18+ and amateur level. (For example, has not competed in Open/Professional Piping Competitions in the past). This event is open to competitors who have not yet competed on a bagpipe in any competition.
As a general guide, we would recommend competitors look at the CLASP Grade 4 Bagpipe events. If these events (on bagpipes) are currently out of reach, it is likely that you would be a good candidate for the practice chanter event as an avenue to enter piping competitions and work towards competing on bagpipes.

Here is a link to CLASP Bagpipe competition tune requirements: https://theclasp.co.uk/set-tunes/#requirements

Competition information
All competitors will need to become CLASP members. This can be done via http://theclasp.co.uk and click on the 'Join Now' icon.  You will receive a welcome email and will be asked to inform us of your grading. If you wish to take part in the practice chanter events, please indicate that in your reply email.

Once your grading is updated you will be able to enter any online practice chanter competitions that are currently open.

How to submit your performance
For the CLASP practice chanter competition, competitors should submitted a pre-recorded video (Unlisted - YouTube Link) by Sunday 27th September 2026 to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk.

All video submissions will be compiled and sent to the judge(s). Each competitor will receive a critique from the judge(s) following the announcement of the prize winners.

How to up load a video to YouTube
Here is a short video guide:  https://youtu.be/vNBUxSX-I28?si=XNlORCnfOtio11Fb

Tune Submission Information
For events in the practice chanter category, all tune submissions are own choice.  For the 2/4 March event and Strathspey & Reel event, a minimum of two parts of each tune should be played. 2 parts of a 4 parted tune can be submitted. For example, a competitor might choose to plays the first two parts of Maggie Cameron (which is a 4 parted Strathspey).

The Overall Chanter Champion
The overall Chanter Championship will be determined by a points system and the person with the highest overall number of points will receive an ES Session Chanter

https://www.essessionchanter.co.uk/stainless

In the event of a tie, the overall award will be given to the competitor with the highest Piobaireachd placing, followed by the 2/4 March event as the next event to be used in a tie break situation.

What to expect on the competition day:

The order of play, performance times and the tunes selected by the judges (for Grade 1 and Grade 2) will be published one week prior to the competition date on The CLASP website.

Once you enter a breakout room (for example 'Grade 2 - Piobaireachd' breakout room) you will be asked, at your designated performance time slot, to start your video recording device and a steward will then introduce you and that will verify the recording. For example, 'This is Mary MacLeod playing The Little Spree for The CLASP 'Live online' November 7th, 2026 competition' and away you go, with a bit of tuning if you need to (but not too much). If using a mobile phone to video your recording, please put it on flight mode and make sure you have sufficient storage on the device.

Important information to remember for competitors -(PLEASE READ ALL)

  1. This is a 'live' VIDEO submission competition and competitors should use the Zoom meeting details as the platform to perform ‘live’ on the listed competition date(s). All video links should be uploaded and emailed as YouTube video links to clasp@thepipingcentre.co.uk by midnight on the day of the competition. Please make sure you set your video as `Unlisted`. The judge will be unable to open a video that is set to Private.
  2. WE STRONGLY advise not to use Zoom as your means of recording your video performance. Our advice is to use a separate device such as a good quality Mobile Phone or a device that gives a clear recording quality. *Remember to place your mobile phone on flight mode if you are using it as a video recording device.
  3. We recommend using a separate device (to the one you plan to video record your performance with) for connecting with the Zoom performance platform. A laptop/computer/tablet or a separate mobile phone device for example. If you do get disconnected at any point after the steward has introduced you, just keep going with your performance and leave the video running. Do not stop the video until the end of your performance.
  4. Please be in your assigned breakout/performance room, ready to play at your allotted time slot. I would ask that you are muted when warming up and that you unmute when it is your time to compete. Please keep an eye on the time when you are warming up so you are not late for your performance slot.
  5.  The Steward will ask you to turn on your video device at your allocated performance time and will announce you. The stewards’ announcement at the start of the video is what verifies the performance so it is really important that this is captured at the start of the Light Music performance and at the start of the Piobaireachd performance. Videos should not be edited.
  6. Please remember that ALL light music events are played in your assigned performance time slot, but competitors can re-tune or stop between events. *An Example of how the order might go for light music... The steward will ask the competitor to Turn on their video recording device, The steward will announce you, and the competitor starts- tune if you need to, play your 2/4 March…… stop/re-tune/drink water but don't stop the video.... Play your Strathspey/Reel... Stop/re-tune/drink water/, but don’t stop the video….Play your Jig/6/8 March and then stop your video recording device.
  7. It is useful for the judges if you add your name and tune names in the YouTube description box when uploading the video.
  8.  Allow enough time to upload your videos to YouTube.
  9. Results will be announced via live video using The CLASP Facebook page. Results will also be published on BagpipeNews and on the news section of The CLASP website.
